Hurricane Recovery

September 2020

Hurricane Sally made landfall on September 16, 2020 near Gulf Shores, AL. The destruction to the area was significant and the Beach Express toll plaza in Orange Beach, AL was severely damaged. As one of only two routes on and off the island, cleanup and repair became the highest priority. The local staff and corporate personnel worked tirelessly to make the plaza passable for emergency and law enforcement vehicles. Plaza management coordinated with local leadership to keep traffic flowing during the initial recovery period at no charge as the community began to clean up and rebuild.

Emergency preparedness and disaster recovery plans are vital to American Roads operations. These plans are reviewed and updated annually and each time a disaster occurs. These documents and trainings allowed for the most efficient recovery process possible at the Beach Express.
